| The Cobra was not unique in its appearance but it was classic. Long hood, short trunk, open top, 2 seater sports car. This combination of features has made money for automobile manufacturers for years. And let’s be honest. When Carroll Shelby was designing this car, he was driving and watching cars like the Jaguars, MG’s, Aston Martins and the like speed around the race track. So why was the Cobra such a hit. It’s main claim to fame was that it won races. It beat the Corvettes. It beat the Ferrari’s. It beat the Jaguars. If you were a kid dreaming about what car you wanted to buy, it would be a Cobra because it was better than the rest. Unfortunately, off the race track it was not a financial success when it was in production. Only a few hundred cars were actually produced and sold. Over 80 Chassis’ remained unfinished when the company closed its doors in 1967. However, even though very few got to drive one of these cars in the 60's, everybody has a story about how they have driven one since. Thousands of replica’s have been produced using the same basic design ideas as the original , put a big American V8 into a lightweight body and frame and then try to keep it on the road. Many companies exist for only one purpose and that is to produce kits for you to assemble your own Cobra. Our kit comes from EVA Sportscars of Vankleek Hill Ontario. Other companies like Factory Five and SuperPerformance will sell you a kit in any stage of completion from a box of parts to a turnkey Cobra, ready to cruise the strip or race at the track. Not to be outdone, even Carroll Shelby has reopened his factory and is producing classic Cobra’s using the remaining 80 or so unfinished frames as well as new Cobra’s using newer technology materials. |
