The Cobra Project,
The Cobra Kids and
Canadian Tire
For the past six years, Canadian Tire on Merivale rd.  has been raising funds to
benefit community projects throughout the Ottawa area.  Through initiatives
like the charity cars shows, charity car raffles, car washes and BBQ’s  we have
donated over $50,000 to local community groups.
One of our more recognised fund raising programs is our charity car raffle.
Our store purchases a classic car, fixes it up, and then raffles it off to raise
money for the Queensway Carleton Hospital.  For 2004/2005,  we have taken
the program to the next level.  In partnership with Rideau Street Youth
Enterprises we have built a 1965 Cobra 427 Replica.
R.S.Y.E. is a non-profit organisation that seeks to employ marginalised youth
while assisting them to overcome personal barriers, acquire employment skills
and earn a wage, with the goal of eventually being able to maintain
employment.  These youth are given support and assistance in such areas as
job search skills,  problem-solving skills, education, housing, the law, and
personal hygiene.
In our project R.S.Y.E. took six youth and under the supervision of qualified
automotive technicians, trained them in the skills necessary to build a car.
Initially, the youth worked on life skills, employment skills, work safety and
basic automotive knowledge.  For the next 12 weeks they were deep into the
assembly of the Cobra.  Then, once finished, they will continue their
employment and life skills training.  Finally, they will be placed in different
automotive industries to enforce the employment training and expose the youth
to real life job issues.
Canadian Tire Merivale joined this project for many reasons.  Firstly, it
connects directly with our commitment to give back to our community.
Secondly, by having youth who are interested in automotive related jobs and
who have proven themselves reliable and dedicated is a great way to begin a
career with us.  Thirdly, the Cobra that they are building will be a showcase of
parts that are available through our store.  And finally, we will be able to give
back to our community once again, by raffling off the finished Cobra.
A Win-Win situation for all of us in the Ottawa Valley
