Canadian Tire Merivale has teamed up with Rideau Street Youth
Enterprises to build and raffle a 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 Kit Car

For the 2004/2005 Queensway Carleton Hospital Car Raffle, Canadian Tire on Merivale Rd. has
teamed up with Rideau Street Youth Enterprises to build a 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 Kit Car.
In the past, we have raffled off cars that were already finished before we received them.  These
cars would simply be cleaned up and then put on display for the public.   This time we thought that
it would be great if we could broaden the benefit of our raffle program by involving the youth in our
community to work on a car before we raffle it off.
To do this, we teamed up with Rideau Street Youth Enterprises, an organisation dedicated to
taking disadvantaged or marginalized youth from the Ottawa area and giving them a chance to
get back on their feet and become productive members of our community.  We provided funding,
products, and training to help R.S.Y.E.  provide six youth with the chance at a better life.  Under
the guidance of certified trainers and mechanics, these youth built our 1965 Shelby Cobra Kit car
from the ground up.  They learned about every aspect of not only installing the parts, but what
those parts did and how they functioned.  They learned how to use the tools of the trade and
received exposure to real life work environments in order to prepare them for a career path in the
automotive industry.   When they were finished, the youth were ready to continue their work
placements in the community including at our Canadian Tire with the hope of achieving full time
employment  The youth are given help to get their G.E.D., their drivers license, as well as taught
social skills to allow them to obtain work and housing in our community.
